2019 GACLA Awards

The Hazleton Integration Project (HIP) was awarded the Pennsylvania Governor’s Advisory Commission On Latino Affairs award. HIP’s Co-founder, Bob Curry, HIP’s Program Director, Elaine Maddon Curry, and HIP’s Executive Director, Rossanna Gabriel, were able to receive the award in person.

2018 Renewal Awards

2018

The Hazleton Integration Project was 1 of 5 recipients of the Renewal Awards, presented by The Atlantic and Allstate. HIP competed against 3,000 other non-profit organizations nationwide to be recognized for its achievements in unifying the diverse Hazleton community. As one of the recipients, HIP received a $20K grant that will go a long way to bring change to the community.

Community Service Award for Peace and Justice

2017

The Hazleton Integration Project was awarded the David Frey Community Service for Peace and Justice Award. This award is given annually by the Interfaith Resource Center for Peace and Justice to an individual or organization whose actions supporting peace and justice have contributed to the quality of life in their community.

The Pennsylvania State Education Association Humanitarian Award

2014

The Hazleton Integration Project received the PSEA Humanitarian Award for being an organization that leads in its community.

Latino Pride Award

July 28, 2014

The Hazleton Integration Project (HIP) received the Latino Pride Award, awarded by IU Migrant Education Program. The award was presented by David Baird (Director of IU Migrant Education Program) to Elaine Maddon Curry, Program Coordinator of HIP; and Bob Curry, Co-founding President of HIP which both had the honor to receive the award at the Pennsylvania State University Hazleton Campus.

Research on HIP and Hazleton One

  • Bringing case studies to life through virtual tutoring

    2016
    Andrea Kolb, Program Director Elaine Maddon Curry, Kayla Hack, and Carla Zembal-Saul collaborated on a research project highlighting the use of virtual tutoring. Virtual tutoring started as an idea and has now become a crucial element in our After School Scholars program.

  • "Undocumented Fears" by Jamie Longazel

    2016
    The Hazleton Integration Project was included in the book Undocumented Fears. Longazel writes, "One of the clearest examples of this multicultural approach is HIP's emphasis on the potential of children to overcome social conflict… Children in contrast will 'engage in activities together, the barriers of unfamiliarity will crumble and friendships will form.'" Joe Maddon added, " When the kids come [to the community center], the parents will [also] come and hopefully all that superficial nonsense will go away. It starts with the kids."

  • Study examines city's changes in immigration, education

    2015
    The Hazleton One Community center was a part of research that was presented at a conference in Chicago. Dr. Megan Hopkins, Andrea Kolb, along with Bob and Elaine Curry, presented the poster outlining the research. The research examined the area’s dramatic increase in immigrant population and how educators adapted to the increase in multicultural students.

  • Hazleton Oral History Project

    2014
    The Hazleton Oral History Project is a joint effort between people taking adult ESL classes at the Hazleton One Community Center through the Concerned Parents of the Hazleton Area’s ESL program and first-year rhetoric and composition students at Penn State Hazleton. Over the course of several weeks, adult ESL learners and Penn State Hazleton students met to co-author stories about adult ESL learners coming to America and living in Hazleton.

    In June 2021, Emmy award-winning news correspondent Enrique Acevedo visited the Hazleton One Community Center to interview some of our students, parents, and volunteers for a feature in an episode of Nick News.
